The Virginia Muslim Civic Coalition is an independent, State wide, non-partisan group. Va-MCC is concerned with domestic issues which directly affect the Virginia Muslim American community’s livelihood.
We focus on issues like Islamophobia, Civil Rights & Civil Liberties, Education, the Economy, Environmental issues, Immigration, and Health Care Reform.
As We, the Muslim-Americans are one of the fastest growing communities in the United States, with a wide array of professional, technical & other backgrounds, Va-MCC feels in many ways that the Muslim community can contribute to America's political sphere and furthermore, that Politicians can seriously benefit from our community’s involvement.
We know that the Muslims have a very reliable voting record and attend to vote in a block.
We do all remember the election of 2008. Two days after the election, the American Muslim Task Force released a poll it was published on The Daily Beast of over 600 Muslims from more than 10 states, and it revealed that 89 percent of respondents voted for then, senator Obama, while only 2 percent voted for senator McCain. It also indicated that 95 percent of Muslims eligible to vote did cast a ballot in that year’s presidential election and it was the highest turnout in a U.S. election history in any one community and over 14 percent of those were first-time voters, and in more recent publication the Muslim Voters May Play Decisive Role in Swing States (NY Times)
said that the outcome of the 2012 presidential election will probably be determined in no more than twelve states. These are the same states where minority groups, including American Muslims, are likely to play a decisive role. We have also recently found that since the 2008 our communities have politically matured and know they do understand that local politics is as important as national politics. So we set our tracks to help and continually educate our community by publishing almost daily how and what our local and national elected officials are doing and reacting to our needs and concerns.
The Va-MCC provides an avenue for our community to connect with our elected officials by information we disperse, town hall meetings that we regularly hold, political candidate debates during election season that we do, and a very active voter registration program that we do a year-round.
Va-MCC has played a large role in making our concerns known to our elected officials, as well as helping engage our community with our public officials to make better policies in Richmond as well as in Washington Dc. We can proudly say that we helped in the VA Halal law, changing the VA School system absentee policy so our children will not be negatively affected when they miss a day in school because of Muslim holidays, and just last month were instrumental in stopping the anti-shariah law in Richmond.
Va-MCC works with any and all elected official that do reach out to us or are willing to listen to us. We are also always in search of ways to connect with our officials and political candidates to introduce them to our community and its concerns.
The Virginia Muslim Civic Coalition have noticed that our community does pay serious attention to the interaction of the candidates or the elected officials with our organization, and they watch closely the non-partisan information that we publish on issues that concern the Virginia Muslim American and about the candidate’s history of support- for and positive interaction with the American Muslim community.
We think the Muslims are prepared for 2012. The Virginia Muslim Civic Coalition has set itself up for a higher level of participation in local and national politics. We are counting on all of the Muslims community nationwide to do the same thing, and willing to help in charring our model. We have developed resources to meet this new threshold of success. American politics is no longer new uncharted territory for us, we have been there and done that and have learned a lot in doing so.
We know that we can’t afford to put all of our eggs in one basket, and we know that we as omma “community “have the right ingredients for success, we volunteer, we contribute and absolutely do vote, and now that we do have the organizational infrastructure named Virginia Muslim Civic Coalition, we recognize that we will be in the play.
May Allah (God) guide us and grant us the wisdom to remain steadfast in our intentions so we do not let our personal gain become higher than the gain for all human kind. I pray that we do not let the Muslim Community’s interests force us to stand against truth and justice. May Allah save us from the corruption of this process.
