MACCPAC concludes youth leadership

MACCPAC concludes youth leadership workshop with high school and college students from greater Washington DC

Washington DC. July 28, 2011. MACCPAC (Muslim American Citizens Coalition & Public Affairs Council) organized the Graduation Ceremony of its first annual YOUTH LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP on Tuesday July 26 at the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) in Sterling, VA. The ceremony was attended by the representatives from the White House Office of Public Engagement, Congressional leadership, local Mosques and national Muslim organizations, as well as the family members of the graduating participants who come from high schools and universities in the greater Washington DC area.

To support the emerging new leadership, MACCPAC introduced the workshop this year, and organized the three days long workshop at three mosques in the Northern Virginia - Dar Al-Noor, Shirley Gate Mosque (ICNVT) and ADAMS. The participants learnt from distinguished speakers (including representative from Dept of Homeland security) on a wide range of topics including peaceful civic engagement, policy-making process in America, quality career and college planning, enhancing inter-faith knowledge and skills, working for the federal government: internship and fellowship overview, legal issue and media communication, effective communication with government and non-government officials, etc. Out of the thirty registered students, twenty-two graduated successfully after passing a written test based on the topics covered in the workshop. Five students were awarded for their extra-ordinary performance evaluated by their participation and test score. These top students are Habiba Sultana (tenth grader at Western School of Technology and Environmental Science, MD), Rahim Abdullah (sophomore at the University of Maryland), Abdullah Ahmed (eleventh grader at Islamic Saudi Academy, VA), Samiha Ahmed (tenth grader at Mount Hebron High School, MD) and Muaz Rahman (freshman at George Washington University).

MACCPAC is a non-profit grassroots organization working to bridge the gap between American Muslims and the mainstream American society. MACCPAC is committed to promoting national security, freedom, human rights, justice and peace through interaction, education, interfaith understanding, coalition building with both government and non-government entities, and coordinating the community efforts.
