ISNA Hopes to See You at the Polls Tomorrow, It's Time to Vote
Yes, it might be cold out in the wee hours of tomorrow morning, but don't let that deter you from voting. Polls are open from 6AM to 7PM at most poll stations nation-wide and our voices cannot be heard unless we make them heard. Make your voice count tomorrow by voting in the 2010 mid-term elections.
"At a time when some elected officials and candidates openly discriminate against the civil rights of Muslims, we need every Muslim in America to vote tomorrow. We must do everything we can to fill our Congress with representatives that are qualified to make equitable decisions and stand on a platform to protect the rights of all Americans," said ISNA Secretary General Safaa Zarzour.
Take your lunch break, wake up half an hour early, or skip out on that trip to the coffee shop to make time to vote. This is important. This is your voice. To find a polling station near you, visithttp://www.vote411.org/pollfinder.php. See you at the polls!
Imam Zaid Shakir, a respected American Islamic scholar and professor, once believed that voting was a waste of time for American Muslims. But now he’s changed his mind.
Now, he’ll tell you that Muslims have an obligation to vote. He says that if you pay your taxes but don’t vote, you’re imposing on yourself “taxation without representation” – what America’s founders described as among the greatest tyrannies of colonialism. He says that Muslims need to get politically active if they want their voices heard and their concerns addressed.
Imam Shakir says that politicians don’t do what we want because we don’t put enough pressure on them, and he’s right. Voting is our duty both as Americans and Muslims. But more importantly, it’s our right. It’s our right to elect people who represent our interests, not only as individuals but also as a community. We simply can’t afford to stay at home this election – especially not while an extreme, hateful vocal group is turning out to the polls and threatening to take the reins of our government.
In American democracy, political voice is political power. Please vote on Nov 2.
